It was Sunday June 19th (Father’s Day) and I had contractions all day. The intensity remained the same and the time was inconsistent.
In the middle of the night I swore it was the real deal because they were coming every three minutes. I went into the office to get checked because I wasn’t in pain, my midwife told me I was 4cm and she could stretch me to 5cm. She told me I could go home and keep her posted because at this point the contractions had faded away. She swore I would end up in labor and delivery within 24 hours.
Days went by and it was the longest week of my life. Family kept calling and asking what was going on and how did I stop laboring just like that?
An entire week went by…
Fast forward to June 26th at 11:45 pm I woke up to somewhat of a burst and discomfort. I stood up and thought hmm this might be my water breaking or maybe I just peed my pants. Within two minutes contractions started. I instantly called the midwife because I knew I was already 5 cm and probably didn’t have a lot of time. I woke up my hubby and decided to shower because I still wasn’t positive it was my water that broke. I was in the shower for ten minutes throwing up from the hormone shift.
My contractions were about 2 minutes long every three minutes. My hubby forced me out of the shower (I would have stayed there all night) he helped me get dressed and then I ended up on our bedroom floor on my hands and knees breathing through the contractions. He kept telling me I needed to get in the car but mentally I needed the time in between the contractions to breathe and take a break. We were waiting for my in-laws to come sleep over and watch our two year old, Eagen.
My husband made the best decision for our lil’ guy to get in the car with us and for my in laws to meet us at the hospital. It was so hard to get downstairs to the car but in between I basically ran there. In the car I was silent and felt extreme pressure in
my butt. In my mind I thought baby was coming but then didn’t believe I could progress that fast. We got in the car around 1:10 am made it to the hospital at 1:25 am. I was soaked my water gushed out the whole car ride. Making my way into the Birthing Center at Inspira Hospital in Elmer, NJ they had the garden sprinklers on… So I continued to become soaking wet as I ran through in serious waves of contractions. This is one of the funniest parts of my labor that I look back on and laugh. What was I doing? lol
My midwife pulled up right behind us and followed us into Labor & Delivery. I walked right into our birth room and sat down on the toilet I spotted meconium so I was a little concerned. My midwife said not worry. She then checked my cervix as I was sitting on the toilet and she told me I was 10 cm and the baby had his head right there. I responded with, “What the fu**?!”
As my husband was taking care of our two year old until our child care arrived my midwife asked if I wanted to deliver on the bathroom floor or if I could make it to the bed. I hobbled over to the bed, landed on my hands and knees and started instantly pushing. My son and husband by my side I remained calm and only let out one “Yelp” and at 1:31 am our son, Owen was born.
With his family in the room to welcome him it was the best thing that could have happened. He was born at exactly 9 pounds and 21 inches long. Checked into the hospital for just six minutes and I was holding my baby in my arms. Truly unbelievable. I’m so happy my husband made the decision not to wait any longer at home.
This is a story I will never forget. ~Gionna
